Karen Schwartz

In my paintings I court ethereal apparitions of symbols, organic forms, and moments that exist for me in the tangential on earth and in the imaginary realm. These are emotional landscapes, most often telling a story of the precarious balance between fear and hope. They bear the weight of wear, and the haziness of passing thoughts and time. I am interested in the push and pull of chaos and order and use this to interpret where my paintings need to go.
The trees of Georgia profoundly impact me. They are everywhere! Protecting and disorienting, beautiful and bug infested, delicately pattered but strong and tall. Forests once represented frontiers where we chose our own paths, faced our fears, and discovered magic. Today we journey through metaphorical forests discovering ourselves, growing up, and going out on our own.
The torso figures emerge from a reoccurring vision I have of the female form arched backward and suspended in a zero gravity space. In my paintings I explore these figures with intuition and spontaneity. Their journey and interactions with the surrounding environment are open to personal interpretation and their stories often change for me with time.
